According to the company, by the end of this year it could reach the point where one in ten buses in its roughly 2,400-vehicle fleet operates without using fossil fuels. The development fits well with the gradual, carefully planned electrification strategy that the company explained in detail a few months ago in response to an enquiry from Magyarbusz [Info].

The milestone 200th electric bus entered service in spring 2026 in Balsthal, in the canton of Solothurn. According to PostAuto, significant progress has been made in the development of electric buses in recent years: while the first battery-electric buses, introduced in Saas-Fee in 2016, still had to build up momentum to tackle certain gradients, today’s vehicles can operate on Alpine routes without any difficulty. The company says this has definitively dispelled the earlier view that fully electric buses are not a viable solution in mountainous environments.

The 200th electric Postbus

The company stressed that a successful transition requires three factors to work together: the availability of suitable vehicles, the development of charging infrastructure, and secured financing. PostAuto says the electric buses currently available already offer excellent quality and reliability, but building the necessary charging network remains a time-consuming process that can take up to two years at an individual depot.

According to the company, financing remains one of the key challenges. In Switzerland, regional bus services are ordered and co-financed by the cantons, so the willingness to cover the additional costs of electric buses and charging infrastructure depends to a large extent on decisions made by the individual cantons. As a result, the pace of electrification varies from region to region, while in more and more places the financial resources available are becoming increasingly constrained.

At the same time, PostAuto believes that in the medium term electric drive could also gain the upper hand from an economic perspective. Based on the company’s own experience, operating electric delivery vehicles is already cheaper than running their diesel counterparts. This trend could be accelerated further by the abolition, from 1 January 2027, of the mineral oil tax refund applied in regional passenger transport, which may further reduce the economic advantage of diesel operation.

The 200-vehicle milestone now reached is, however, only one stage in PostAuto’s electrification programme. The company previously confirmed to Magyarbusz [Info] that it plans to put a further 116 fully battery-electric buses into service during 2026, with the vehicles set to appear in more than a dozen Swiss towns and cities. This will allow the company to gather further operating experience under differing topographical, traffic and climatic conditions. In the longer term, PostAuto’s goal remains unchanged: by 2040, it intends to convert its entire fleet of around 2,400 vehicles to fossil-free propulsion, while continuing to regard a gradual, well-timed transition as the key to success.

PostAuto, Switzerland’s leading bus operator in local and regional public transport, has put its 200th fully electric bus into service, marking another important milestone in its programme to electrify its entire fleet.
