The 12-meter, self-propelled trolleybus will undergo on-site tests and acceptance inspections in the coming months before the delivery of series production vehicles can commence. Under the framework agreement concluded last year, TransLink has so far ordered 275 Trollino trolleybuses, in 12 and 18-meter versions, with the option to order an additional 237 vehicles.

The Vancouver order is notable not only for its volume but also as it marks Solaris’s first North American trolleybus order. During the public procurement process concluded last year, the Polish manufacturer outbid local company New Flyer, a dominant player in the North American trolleybus market, which now remains only in Vancouver, Seattle, Dayton, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. The competitive price, favorable delivery schedule, and the widely proven Trollino platform in Europe all played a significant role in Solaris’s success.

Photo: Anthony Klinksgaard

Interestingly, the decision in Canada met with little criticism. Within the professional community and transportation forums, the fact that a European manufacturer won the order after decades of New Flyer’s market dominance was generally well-received. Many pointed out that the high prices of North American manufacturers and the long delivery times for vehicles and parts led many to view Solaris’s entry as a break in New Flyer’s long-standing market dominance. Locals are also eagerly anticipating the new Trollinos entering service, as they offer several features that are rare among North American trolleybuses. The vehicles are fully low-floor and the 12-meter version will have three doors, while the articulated version will have four doors, which significantly differs from the usual designs in the region.

The Trollinos are entirely manufactured at Solaris’s Polish facilities. This is possible because, unlike the United States, Canada does not have a nationwide regulation similar to the Buy America Act, which would mandate domestic production or a specified proportion of local content for publicly funded transportation vehicle procurements. Although some provinces and support programs have local content requirements, there is no such requirement for Vancouver, allowing the trolleybuses ordered by TransLink to be fully produced in Poland.

This also means that the completed vehicles must travel a very long distance to reach their final destination. The first prototype, numbered 27001, traveled by road to the port of Bremerhaven in Germany after the March trials in Gdynia and final modifications at the factory. From there, it was shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to Halifax, Canada. However, it still faced nearly 6,000 kilometers of road transport: it arrived at TransLink’s Vancouver Transit Centre (VTC) on a special trailer, crossing the entire width of Canada, on June 17, 2026.

The solo prototype that arrived in Canada will soon be followed by the first example of the articulated version, which has already successfully completed its European trials in Gdynia, Poland. According to the current schedule, the delivery of series production Trollinos could begin in 2027. The manufacturer previously confirmed to us that the program currently includes 275 vehicles, consisting of 183 12-meter solo and 92 18-meter articulated Trollinos. The new vehicles will gradually replace the Coast Mountain Bus Company’s New Flyer E40LFR and E60LFR trolleybuses, which entered service between 2006 and 2009 and currently make up Vancouver’s entire trolleybus fleet.

The first tangible result of TransLink’s extensive fleet renewal program has arrived in Canada: the first prototype of the new Solaris Trollino fleet, destined for the Coast Mountain Bus Company, has reached Vancouver.
