The starting point, Part-Dieu station, is not only Lyon’s busiest rail hub but also a central transfer point for metro, tram, and bus networks. From here, there is direct access to the D metro line’s Sans Souci station, as well as several stops on the B metro and T1, T3, and T4 tram lines.

The eastern terminus, Sept Chemins junction, plays a crucial role in local traffic and offers significant transfer opportunities to the new suburban bus network, Ligne de l’Est Lyonnais (LEL). Developed by SYTRAL Mobilités, this high-frequency, high-capacity express service connects Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie with Saint-Exupéry International Airport, passing through towns like Chassieu and Genas. The LEL line will feature CNG-powered buses, aiming to provide an environmentally friendly and efficient alternative for suburban transportation. Sept Chemins will serve as an intermodal hub, facilitating easy and quick transfers between urban and suburban networks through direct pedestrian connections and synchronized timetables.

The TB12 rapid bus project will significantly improve public transport services for Lyon’s 3rd district and the districts of Villeurbanne, Bron, and Vaulx-en-Velin. With reliable, frequent, and extensive operating hours, the new system will play a pivotal role in enhancing the competitiveness of public transport. Long-term plans include extending the line by 9 kilometers towards Parilly by 2029, reaching southeastern suburban areas, university campuses, and industrial zones, including Université Lumière Lyon 2.

The implementation was preceded by multiple stages of public consultation from 2021 to 2024, coordinated by SYTRAL Mobilités. The involved municipalities—Lyon, Villeurbanne, Vaulx-en-Velin, and Bron—worked together to ensure social acceptance of the project.

The route from Part-Dieu to Sept Chemins will span approximately 8.8 kilometers, with 19 stops. The expected travel time in one direction is 25 minutes, with peak-time intervals every 7 minutes. The route will run on dedicated bus lanes, featuring modern passenger information systems, accessible platforms, and uniform stop designs. Construction will proceed in two phases, with the first section between Part-Dieu and Place Kimmerling expected in 2026, and the second section towards Sept Chemins in 2027. The total estimated construction cost is approximately 137 million euros. The new rapid bus network will offer a service quality comparable to tram lines, operating from 4:30 AM to midnight, with 7-minute intervals during peak times.

The route will primarily utilize newly constructed pathways, but will also incorporate existing urban road networks. Stops are designed to a high standard, accommodating long vehicles, with some platforms specifically planned to serve bi-articulated trolleybuses, allowing for future system expansion.

Preparatory work related to the construction began in January 2024, focusing on modernizing underground utilities. Water, sewage, gas, district heating, and electrical networks are being upgraded by the respective service providers in coordination with SYTRAL’s schedule. These upgrades are essential for the safe and long-term operation of future transport infrastructure.

This development is significant not only in terms of transportation but also urban planning. Pedestrianized zones, new bicycle paths, and green spaces will be created in the served areas, contributing to improved quality of life in the neighborhoods. The trolleybuses have zero local emissions, making the project part of a broader environmental sustainability strategy. Daily passenger numbers are expected to exceed 23,000.

The vehicles operating on the line will be the articulated lighTram® 19 DC trolleybuses manufactured by Swiss company Hess.
