New alarming developments have surfaced from Ebusco, based in Deurne, the Netherlands. Due to the company’s deepening financial and leadership crisis, the shareholders’ meeting originally planned for Monday was postponed, as the auditor did not approve the annual report. This is a serious warning sign in itself, especially considering that the company’s future has become increasingly uncertain over the past months link<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Prior to the postponement of the general meeting, the company’s CEO, Christian Schreyer, unexpectedly resigned from his position. He had taken over the leadership of Ebusco less than ten months ago with the aim of stabilizing operations. According to the official explanation, Schreyer left due to health reasons, but Dutch media reports suggest serious personal conflicts between him and founder Peter Bijvelds.<\/p>\n

This comes at a time when Ebusco soon has to repay a 22 million euro loan package with a 10% interest rate, taken earlier this year to maintain operations. The August deadline is approaching, yet the company’s situation shows no improvement.<\/p>\n

Ebusco’s difficulties are not new. The company has been operating in a crisis mode for years. Founded in 2012 by Peter Bijvelds, the manufacturer specializing in purely electric buses initially achieved spectacular success. It counted customers like Connexxion, Deutsche Bahn, and Keolis among its partners. After a Chinese supplier background, they opened their own plant in the Netherlands, inaugurated by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands in 2020. The company also went public in 2021.<\/p>\n

However, the initial momentum stalled quickly. By 2022, significant manufacturing difficulties arose, primarily due to parts shortages and workforce issues, leading to delays or cancellations of several orders. The manufacturing issues were quickly followed by financial problems<\/a>. The company’s revenue plummeted from 102 million euros in 2023 to less than 11 million in 2024, while they posted annual losses of 200 million euros. To maintain operations, external capital injections were frequently needed, but these did not significantly stabilize the company’s position.<\/p>\n

In 2024, founder Bijvelds formally stepped down from the CEO position<\/a>, followed by a series of leadership changes. Internal uncertainties were further exacerbated by the erosion of investor confidence; the Dutch shareholder advocacy organization VEB labeled the company’s strategy as a “mirage” at a general meeting last year\u2014fewer people believe the company will return to a growth path.<\/p>\n

In recent months, Ebusco’s situation has further deteriorated, and previous difficulties have deepened into a persistent operational crisis. While investors have been willing to provide further resources for the company, it is increasingly questionable how long this patience will last. The rapid rise and subsequent sharp decline of the company also highlight the vulnerability of Dutch industrial policy. Only two significant domestic bus manufacturers remain today, Ebusco and the also loss-making VDL. The latter has recently openly advocated for protective tariffs against Chinese products.<\/p>\n

The situation also raises the question of whether it would be justified to reform the practice of public transport procurement to support the domestic industry. However, it is questionable whether even a more favorable regulatory environment would be sufficient to save Ebusco. The unexpected resignation of the CEO has further increased organizational uncertainty, and internal tensions have risen.
