The contract, concerning a total of 1500 permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, was signed back in June 2024, but the Austrian main unit manufacturer only recently reported it officially.

Delivery of the motors intended for the Polish bus manufacturer’s 12, 15, and 18-meter long electric product line began last December with the first five units, which were installed in the Solaris Urbino 18 electric articulated buses prepared for the Swedish market. The HD.T3 type permanent magnet synchronous motor, which is the subject of the agreement, is capable of delivering a peak power of 420 kW and a maximum torque of 4000 Nm, with an efficiency exceeding 97% according to TSA. Thanks to its compact design and modular construction, the manufacturer recommends it for driving various sizes of battery and fuel cell bus types.

TSA HD.T3 type permanent magnet synchronous electric motor to be installed in Solaris electric buses (Photo: Traktionssysteme Austria)

TSA, which previously also supplied asynchronous traction motors for Solaris trolleybuses, participated as a key partner in the development of the latest electric powered edition of the Urbino series. Its articulated version (featured on our cover) was presented at the 2023 Busworld Europe exhibition in Brussels, while the solo version was showcased at the next year’s Mobility Move event in Berlin. One of the most important innovations from a passenger perspective in the updated version is the disappearance of the engine dome inherited from internal combustion models, alongside a significantly larger traction battery pack than previous versions. TSA, which has mainly earned its reputation in the railway sector, aims to take a greater part in the expansion of road electromobility in the future. To support portfolio expansion, they recently opened a new production unit in Wiener Neudorf, and are investing a total of 35 million euros in the development of the Austrian factory over the coming years, according to CEO Robert Tencl. Recently, a unique rotor-stator assembly station was also put into operation, and the level of automation in production is being increased as well.

Besides the Austrian electric motors, Solaris also favors using ZF electric powertrains in its zero-emission models—in both central and quasi-wheel hub motor arrangements—offering its customers unique technical variability in the market.

Cover photo: Solaris Bus & Coach

After fifteen years of continuous cooperation, the Austrian TSA (Traktionssysteme Austria) and Solaris have signed a new three-year supplier framework agreement.
