In the first six months of 2026, the group posted revenue of €2.077 billion, 3% higher than the €2.017 billion recorded a year earlier, while net profit rose by 11%, from €53 million to €59 million. Its total order book increased even more markedly, by 27%: from €1.855 billion at the start of the year to €2.335 billion by the end of August.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">However, VDL Bus Group continues to stand out negatively from the favourable group-level figures. The bus division, which brings together the VDL and Van Hool brands, saw first-half revenue fall by 2% to €219 million, and the business remains loss-making. In this context, VDL is now explicitly pointing to low utilisation at its plants, caused by cheaper products from other parts of the world being sold in Europe.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F09\u002FScreenshot_20260612_175102_Facebook.webp\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95936\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F09\u002FScreenshot_20260612_175102_Facebook.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"435\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">Although VDL did not specifically name the manufacturers or countries it was referring to in its statement, the wording points above all to the situation that has developed in the market for electric city buses. One of the most significant trends in this segment in recent years has been the rapid expansion of Chinese manufacturers in Europe. They are appearing in an increasing number of tenders, typically exerting strong price pressure on the continent’s established manufacturers. While VDL does not directly name Chinese competition, it is difficult to separate its comments from this market trend.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">The latest figures also add nuance to the picture of VDL’s bus business that emerged from its \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F03\u002F24\u002Feros-rendelesallomany-mellett-is-veszteseges-a-vdl-buszdivizioja\u002F\">2025 annual results\u003C\u002Fa>. In March, we reported in detail that the division had been unable to return to profitability despite rising revenue and an order book that then stood at €611 million. Several factors played a role in last year’s loss-making performance: the significant development and production start-up costs of ramping up the Citea electric platform, technical difficulties during its introduction, the development and launch of series production of the new Futura generation, the restructuring of the entire production setup, and the one-off and transitional costs associated with integrating Van Hool.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F09\u002Fcsm_104787_01_35da43f7a7.jpg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95937\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F09\u002Fcsm_104787_01_35da43f7a7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"494\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">By now, however, another problem has clearly come to the surface: underutilised production capacity. This is particularly interesting in light of the fact that, in 2024, VDL acquired the bus activities of the bankrupt Van Hool precisely in order to create economies of scale, a broader product portfolio and new market opportunities. Van Hool’s North American presence and traditionally strong market position were also important elements in the business rationale behind the acquisition. For the time being, however, the hoped-for results have not fully materialised, while some production sites are currently operating with unused capacity.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">Meanwhile, the market launch of the new VDL Futura 3 continues in the coach segment. The first examples of the new generation were delivered in 2026 in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Norway, Finland, Poland and Spain. The manufacturer plans to unveil the right-hand-drive version in the fourth quarter of this year. Van Hool’s and VDL’s bus activities now operate within the joint VDL Bus Group organisation, with the two brands positioned as complementary offerings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F09\u002FScreenshot_20260712_192804_Gallery.jpg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95938\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F09\u002FScreenshot_20260712_192804_Gallery.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"462\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">Overall, VDL Groep is in a far more favourable position than the bus business’s losses alone would suggest. Revenue in the Finished Products division, for example, rose by 33% to €591 million, mainly thanks to its food industry, energy and defence activities, and both this business and the Subcontracting division are profitable. The company expects further growth at group level in the second half of the year, driven primarily by high-tech and defence industry activities. In the mobility business, however, it does not expect growth.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">When presenting its results, the Dutch company also placed the problem in a broader European industrial policy context. VDL said that, because of geopolitical changes, it is strategically important for the Netherlands and Europe to maintain their own production capabilities in key sectors and to reduce dependence on other parts of the world. The company stressed that it has for years been calling for a level global playing field and believes a stronger European industrial policy is needed to prevent the continent from losing further ground.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">The current situation of the bus division may be a tangible example of this: while VDL has invested significant sums in a new electric platform, European production capacity and the integration of Van Hool, the company says cheaper vehicles arriving from outside Europe are already creating price competition that has a direct impact on plant utilisation and, ultimately, on the business unit’s profitability. Some of these ultimately ended up with Chinese manufacturers: to replace vehicles originally to have been supplied by Van Hool to the Dutch operator Qbuzz, for example, Yutong and BYD buses were ordered, while Chinese players also gained opportunities in other procurements reallocated after Van Hool’s withdrawal.
