With the company’s collapse, the continuity of the procurement and supplier network built up until then was also broken, meaning that for a time even the sourcing of specifically Van Hool spare parts posed major difficulties for operators.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">The situation only began to stabilise after the Dutch VDL Groep took over a significant part of the bankrupt Van Hool’s bus operations in June 2024. As part of the transaction, in addition to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2024\u002F08\u002F17\u002Fa-vdl-hivatalosan-is-atvette-a-van-hool-macedoniai-gyarat\u002F\">the plant in North Macedonia\u003C\u002Fa>, VDL also acquired the intellectual property, design and manufacturing rights, software, product names, and numerous production tools and machines related to Van Hool vehicles. In Koningshooikt, at Van Hool’s former factory, around 250 former Van Hool employees were taken on, including in parts production, aftersales, procurement and development.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_ex15h.jpeg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95409\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_ex15h.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"499\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">The takeover in itself, however, did not mean that the parts supply could simply resume from where it had left off before the bankruptcy. Processes that had been interrupted for months, along with former supplier relationships, effectively had to be rebuilt. Previous partners had to be contacted again, some suppliers had to be re-contracted, while in other cases new sources of supply had to be found. VDL itself acknowledged that restarting deliveries and integrating the operations of a bankrupt company the size of Van Hool was far from a simple task.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">To handle this, VDL Parts Belgium was established in Koningshooikt, specialising specifically in the procurement, warehousing, sale and delivery of spare parts for the Van Hool fleet. Parts supply gradually restarted in the second half of 2024, while production of certain components was also reorganised in Belgium. Rebuilding the spare parts supply took many months: it took around nine months for the new system to become fully operational, and the supply chain only stabilised after that, meaning the situation can essentially be regarded as resolved by 2026.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_t17_acron37.jpeg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95410\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_t17_acron37.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">At the same time, it is important to note that rebuilding the supply chain does not automatically mean that every spare part for every former Van Hool model is available as quickly and easily as it was before the bankruptcy. Besides the disruption of the former supplier network, the Van Hool fleet still in operation is itself extremely heterogeneous: it includes several generations, different drivetrains, low-volume variants and designs tailored specifically to the needs of individual operators. Supplying a widely used supplier component is therefore a very different task from sourcing, or if necessary reproducing, a Van Hool-specific part for an older, already discontinued design.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fc35bfe55-f734-11ee-8fc9-02b7b76bf47f-2-1.webp\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95411\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fc35bfe55-f734-11ee-8fc9-02b7b76bf47f-2-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"429\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">All this also applies to city buses. Although, following the takeover, VDL \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2024\u002F10\u002F22\u002Fdontott-a-vdl-ezeket-a-van-hool-modelleket-gyartjak-tovabb\u002F\">did not continue production of Van Hool’s city buses\u003C\u002Fa>, it did carry on the spare parts supply and support for vehicles already in service. In other words, the end of production of the city bus models did not in itself mean the dismantling of the aftersales background: support for these vehicles was also incorporated into the newly built VDL spare parts supply system.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_exqui.city_247.jpeg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95421\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_exqui.city_247.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"462\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">The story, however, has not continued in the same way for all of Van Hool’s former types. One of the manufacturer’s most distinctive product families, the Exqui.City, found itself in a special position. Around 400 examples of the tram-inspired Exqui.City were built over the years. Developed primarily for high-capacity urban transport duties, the distinctive model family was produced in articulated and bi-articulated versions, with fully electric, trolleybus, hydrogen fuel-cell, gas-powered and, previously, hybrid drivetrains. A significant proportion of the vehicles built are still in active service in various European cities, including Geneva, Linz, Trondheim, Malmö, Metz, Belfast, Nîmes, Parma and Rimini, so ensuring the type’s long-term technical and spare parts support did not become an insignificant issue with the disappearance of Van Hool.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002F555571214_10214598780679906_3766276891490030821_n-1920x1279-1.webp\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95415\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002F555571214_10214598780679906_3766276891490030821_n-1920x1279-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">After Van Hool’s bankruptcy, the Exqui.City story diverged from that of the manufacturer’s other city bus types. The model did not remain with VDL: the intellectual property rights related to the Exqui.City ultimately passed to the Swiss company Hess as part of a technology transfer. With this, the type continued its career with its former direct competitor, and indeed with a manufacturer that itself has considerable experience in the development and production of high-capacity buses and trolleybuses, especially bi-articulated vehicles.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002FScreenshot_20250702_112631_LinkedIn.webp\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95413\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002FScreenshot_20250702_112631_LinkedIn.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"490\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">The first reports of the Van Hool legacy becoming linked with Hess emerged in connection with the Paris Exqui.City project. Île-de-France Mobilités had ordered 30 24-metre bi-articulated electric Exqui.City buses from Van Hool, but by the time the Belgian manufacturer went bankrupt in spring 2024, only five vehicles had been delivered. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2024\u002F08\u002F12\u002Fparizs-52-milliardos-projektjet-akasztotta-meg-a-van-hool-csodje\u002F\">The remaining 25 buses, however, were already at various, generally advanced stages of completion at the Koningshooikt factory\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002F523950403_1303498558452606_3242519707773700054_n-1.jpg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95412\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002F523950403_1303498558452606_3242519707773700054_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"381\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">Île-de-France Mobilités subsequently reached an agreement with the liquidators to take over the 25 unfinished vehicles, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2025\u002F01\u002F06\u002Fhess-valoban-mi-fejezzuk-be-parizs-duplacsuklos-van-hool-villanybuszait\u002F\">and then arranged for their completion with the involvement of Hess\u003C\u002Fa>. The original technology partner, Kiepe, also played a key role in this, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F01\u002F28\u002Fa-hess-felvasarolta-a-kiepe-electric-trolibuszos-uzletagat\u002F\">whose trolleybus business had meanwhile come under Hess ownership\u003C\u002Fa>. Drawing on Kiepe’s technological background and the expertise of former Van Hool employees, the Swiss manufacturer completed the 25 bi-articulated Exqui.City electric buses, so despite Van Hool’s bankruptcy, the full 30-vehicle Paris fleet could ultimately \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2025\u002F10\u002F05\u002Fcelegyenesben-a-parizsi-tzen-4-brt-projekt-megerkeztek-a-van-hool-duplacsuklos-villanybuszok-elindult-a-tesztuzem\u002F\">be completed\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F02\u002F11\u002Felindult-a-tzen-4-duplacsuklos-elektromos-brt-vonal-a-del-parizsi-agglomeracioban\u002F\">is now in service\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fscania_van_hool_exqui.city_18_8.jpeg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95416\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fscania_van_hool_exqui.city_18_8.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"478\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">At the same time, the Paris project was only the first tangible sign that Hess’s role extends far beyond completing vehicles started by Van Hool. Through the technology transfer agreed with VDL, the Swiss manufacturer not only took over the intellectual property rights related to the Exqui.City, but also assumed a defining role in the long-term technical support of the model family already in service. Hess’s Belgian unit has an important part to play in this, having also taken on former Van Hool specialists, meaning that some of the technical knowledge and experience associated with the type also lives on at the Swiss manufacturer on the personnel side.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">Hess’s aim is to support operators of Exqui.City vehicles until the end of the buses’ planned service life. In addition to possible conversions, this also covers technical support for the vehicles, spare parts supply and software updates.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_exqui.city_2412.jpeg\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-95417\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia.magyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002Fvan_hool_exqui.city_2412.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"464\" title=\"\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">At the same time, this does not mean that the problems surrounding the maintenance of Exqui.City vehicles have disappeared overnight. A good example is the eight hydrogen fuel-cell Exqui.City buses in Pau, France, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2026\u002F08\u002F04\u002Fveget-er-a-van-hool-hidrogenbuszok-palyafutasa-pau-brt-vonalan\u002F\">whose future has become uncertain precisely because of difficulties with spare parts supply\u003C\u002Fa>. Of the eight vehicles, six are currently available for service, while two are being used as a source of parts to keep the others operational.
