The line is scheduled to enter service by the end of 2027. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">Together with the development of the Regional Urban Railway (Regionalstadtbahn Linz), the investment is Linz’s largest public transport project in recent decades. The two programmes together represent an investment package of more than 700 million euros, aimed at transforming urban and suburban transport in a climate-neutral way. The choice was therefore justified both in terms of cost efficiency and urban structure, particularly in Linz’s eastern districts, where dense development would have made construction of a tramway a far more complex and expensive solution. Financing is being provided through a three-party model: the federal government, the province of Upper Austria and the City of Linz will jointly bear the costs. The provincial contribution is capped at a maximum of 23.7 million euros. The total infrastructure investment amounts to 59.3 million euros, of which the above-mentioned public funding covers roughly 40% of expenditure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">The project is not without controversy, however. According to Upper Austria’s transport councillor, the international trend is clearly moving towards battery-electric buses, which, with their lower infrastructure costs and increasing range, are displacing trolleybuses in many cities. The project preparation phase began in 2024 and includes route engineering, permitting and financing preparations. Construction work – including the building of new stops, overhead line sections and power supply facilities – is expected to begin in autumn 2026. According to the company, implementation of the project is progressing according to schedule, although the vehicle procurement procedure had to be restarted in April 2025. This was necessary because the project’s previous preferred supplier, Belgium’s Van Hool, became insolvent in 2024, meaning that delivery of the trolleybus fleet had to be \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2025\u002F03\u002F21\u002Flinz-ujabb-duplacsuklos-trolibuszokat-vasarolna\u002F\">retendered under a new open public procurement procedure\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">Linz Linien had previously \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmagyarbusz.info\u002F2021\u002F02\u002F22\u002Fujabb-kilenc-darab-van-hool-duplacsuklos-trolibuszt-vasarol-a-linz-linien-gmbh\u002F\">purchased 20 Van Hool Exqui.City 24T bi-articulated, off-wire-capable trolleybuses in 2015\u003C\u002Fa>, as part of a framework agreement supplemented by a comprehensive maintenance contract. Under this arrangement, Linz Linien participates as a subcontractor in the operation and maintenance of the vehicles, ensuring a unified service background and transparency in operating processes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"text-align: justify\">In the first phase of procurement, 12 trolleybuses would be purchased, followed by a non-binding option agreement for the call-off of a further 27 vehicles. The tender calls for high-capacity, bi-articulated trolleybuses at least 24 and no more than 25 metres long, capable of covering at least 10 kilometres in off-wire operation. The line will provide a direct link between the eastern districts – including the industrial zone along the Danube and densely populated newly developed areas – and the city centre. Based on preliminary traffic calculations, the route could serve up to 20,000 passengers a day, making it one of the busiest corridors on the Linz trolleybus network.
